Laboratory reports
Every stone on this site is sold with a report from an independent gemmological laboratory. The lab name and report number are listed in the "Stone details" table on the product page, a scan of the report is shown in the gallery, and the original document ships with the stone. Our current stock carries reports from GRS GemResearch Swisslab, GUILD Gem Laboratories, Bellerophon Gemlab, Lotus Gemology, GIA and Gem Report Antwerp.
Checking a report yourself
GRS, GUILD, GIA and Lotus Gemology let you look up a report number on their own websites. Our guide How to verify a gemstone lab report explains what each lab shows and what to compare with the stone in front of you. A second opinion from another laboratory can be arranged before shipping, at cost; ask us for a quote and turnaround time.
How we label treatments
- No heat (lab-confirmed) / None (lab-confirmed): the laboratory report states no indications of heating or other treatment. All rubies and sapphires currently listed carry this status; the diamonds are reported as natural colour.
- Heated: the stone has been heat-treated, a common and stable treatment for many gem species. Any heated stone is labelled as such on its product page.
- Other (disclosed): another treatment is present and is described on the product page.
- Not tested: no laboratory has examined the stone for treatment. We do not describe untested stones as untreated.
What the different wordings on a report mean, and how they affect value, is covered in Unheated vs heated ruby and sapphire.
Trade colour terms
Terms such as "pigeon's blood", "royal blue", "cornflower" or "peacock" appear in our titles only when the laboratory report itself uses them. Each laboratory applies its own criteria; see what pigeon's blood means at each lab and what royal blue means at each lab.
Origin
Origin is stated as given by the laboratory report. Where the report does not state an origin, the product page says so, and we do not add one from the supplier's word.
